Rent
a Canal Boat
See the state in a new and magical light on the New York State
Canal System. Marvel at the engineering that makes it possible to
take a boat up and down the waterway's 57 locks or "water elevators."
Feel your canal boat being raised and lowered as you navigate through
the locks.
The New York State Canal System stretches over 500 miles, passing by
wildlife preserves and forever-wild territory, by small towns and bustling
cities. Discover quaint waterside restaurants and festivals held along
this great waterway. The canal system traditionally operates from May
through mid-November.
You can rent an authentic, old-fashioned canal boat fully equipped
for a few days or a week. Most sleep six to eight passengers. After
a few hours of training you are ready to pilot the boat yourself. The
pace is leisurely, just about five miles per hour.
