Together
in the Finger Lakes
Native Americans believed the 11 Finger Lakes, set amid rolling countryside
rich with vineyards, were formed by God's hand pressing into the earth.
The Finger Lakes region features enough natural beauty to delight any
photographer and is the perfect backdrop for a romantic getaway.
You may wish to stay in one of the stately country inns and castles
that are available in the areas. The Belhurst Castle, Geneva-on-the-Lake,
Rose Ann Inn and more offer fine service, luxurious accommodations,
spectacular architecture and magnificent settings.
The Finger Lakes are home to more wineries than any other region of
New York State. At Bully Hill Vineyards, Castel Grisch Winery,
Widmer's Wine Cellars and more you can sample some of New York
State's best vintages. Some offer lovely outdoor settings for lunch
overlooking the vines, rolling hills and lakes. Contact the New York
Wine and Grape Foundation (315/536-7442) for information about wineries
in the region and throughout the state.
Ithaca, at the southern tip of Cayuga Lake, is the City of Waterfalls.
Dozens are within city limits, and hundreds more are within several
miles -- each one more astonishing than the last. In Taughannock
Falls State Park, just north of Ithaca lies the highest straight
drop east of the Rockies. Taughannock Falls drops 215 feet into a natural
amphitheater, the walls of which extend 400 feet.
While in Ithaca, don't miss Cornell University. The stonework
on campus is set off by fresh streams, deep ravines and densely treed
areas with winding paths. For more information, call the Tompkins County
Chamber of Commerce (800/284-8422, 607/272-1313).
Be sure to bring your bicycle and your New York State Road Map because
the friendly topography of the region, with breathtaking views, is ideal
for bicycling. The area also boasts many roadside fruit and vegetable
stands, so you can stop and sit on the grass and enjoy your favorite
pick.
