Craig Wood wasn't your average golfer - the Lake Placid native won 17 tournaments, including the Masters and the U.S. Open, between 1928 and 1941 - and the golf course that bears his name isn't your average municipal course.
The 81-year-old Seymour Dunn design is full of quirky, entertaining holes, like No. 8, with its tree in the middle of the fairway. The par-3 13th has a straight canyon drop to a tiny green and perplexes USGA handicap raters year after year. The mountain scenery is spectacular, and the grounds crew's loving care keeps the course in much better condition than you'd expect from a muni with a $32 green fee.
