Tallgrass
I booked my tee time through a hot deal on Golfnow, so the value for the money was excellent. I wouldn't necessarily pay the regular prices on a regular basis, just once in a while. The course was in very good condition. The greens were pretty good. Some were spotty, but they rolled fine. The pace of play was good, a little over four hours.
Good value
Course in good shape. Very windy which made course play tougher.
Extremely Disappointing
As everyone is aware the Northeast had a horrible winter and it doesn't want to let go. That being said, the greens at Tallgrass are and will be for some time unplayable. Think of them as putting on a waffle iron. They appear to have been aerated about a month ago and are heavily sanded. They haven't been rolled or if they have, it doesn't show. The rough is down, which will attest to the lousy growing season. Pace of play was 4 hours and forty five minutes. The groups out in the mid afternoon had no waiting on tee boxes or fairways. Tallgrass offers a meal with your green fee, and it was a good one, although no drink was included. Hopefully the weather will improve and the staff an get the course into better condition. Give a few weeks of warm sunny days and it should shape up.
Course is in awful condition
Played there on Sunday 5/31/2015. 1st time playing the course and I'm not sure where these good reviews are coming from! The course is in terrible condition the greens had more sand on them than grass.....you cannot putt on these greens and they did not mention that anywhere online or at the course.
The course itself is average at best even if the greens were in good shape. The course is wide open, reasonably flat and the 'Tallgrass' is not tall. Most disappointing round this year.
Wish the greens were ok
Shame on me for not checking to see if work was being done, the lack of people should have been a giveaway. Regardless of the less than stellar putting surfaces all day I love this course. Classic links style, always windy and challenging, a great test of your overall game. I will probably wait a while for the greens to come around, but I will be back MULTIPLE TIMES !
Good news was that I played the front 9 as a single in less than 2 hours and the whole round in 4. I have recommended Tallgrass to several people and will continue to do so.
Great greens
Love this course great layout greens best ever worth the price
Just playing golf but nothing was interesting.
Fairway was so dry and the geen condition was bad for putting because of airification.
Nice day out there
I've played this course before and have always liked it as it was always in great condition. Today (5/3) the conditions were a little tough. The greens were aerated , very fast and hard to read. The fairways were just starting to comeback from the winter. The pace was slow(5 hrs) as it was a real nice day out there. If you havent played this course before,I'd give it a try.
Impressive
Tallgrass is in great shape compared to other courses for this time of year. The staff was terrific and I had a great experience. Caution - the wind really whips here. If it's supposed to be windy, you may think about another course.
Enjoy!!!
Great Winter Round
Late december and 55 degrees. Greens were good and quick considering time of year. Great day.
Great design
Course was a pleasure to play offering a nice variety of holes with quick greens and nice undulations.
This was an amazing golf course.
All of the tee boxes were well maintained. All of the fairways were in great condition. The greens were well manicured. The greens were very fast and challenging. The overall experience was great. If you are able to play 18 holes of golf in November with 64 degrees on a great golf course, that makes for a good time.
Perfect Friday Round at Tallgrass
Great Friday round at Tallgrass. The weather was perfect. The course was pristine with freshly manicured fairways and bunkers. Greens were rolling fast and true. The 19th hole was a treat with friendly service and great food. I met up with 3 friendly gentlemen who were part of my foursome to complete the perfect Friday round!
Tricky and Challenging
Doesn't look like it's going to be a tough course but there are lots of ways to get into trouble. Plays longer than it looks. The greens are VERY fast. Very challenging. In great shape!
Where was the staff?
Course was in the best shape I have ever seen it. Greens were very fast with undulations and some subtle breaks. Unfortunately, I was left standing around the staging area with no starter to advise when I could go out and with whom I would be paired. Finally sent myself out with a twosome. Course was overcrowded and pace was horrendous for a weekday afternoon. No ranger in sight. Carts with Starter and Ranger flags sat empty near the pro shop all afternoon.
Not A Fan Of Links Courses, but.....
.....this is a great course! Tee boxes and fairways are immaculate......greens are challenging - fast and undulating - birdies can easily turn to boogies if you don't control your speed - assuming your approach shot can hold the green.
My only negative comment is regarding the lack of yardage markers on the fairways - I couldn't find any!
Personal plus...I left 2 clubs somewhere on the course - someone returned them to the pro shop. By the time I finished my round the pro shop was closed...they found someone to come back and unlock so I could retrieve my clubs...was much apprecieted!
decent course
Course played very well. Wind is a big factor. Overall was a great place and will be playing again. Got it for 29 bucks with the golf now app otherwise I think it is a little pricey. The greens were in horrible shape, looks as if they are never worked on. Fairways were in decent shape. Would recomend.
Hidden gem
Very nice course. After I checked in as a single, the guy in the pro shop said my playing partners hadn't arrived. I knew what my time I was so I figured that was good enough. About 5 minutes to my tee time I noticed people were just going off the tee and there wasn't a starter to be seen. When it got to my time, I went to the tee box and asked the gents if they had the same time, they did, and we played on. This was the only negative about my experience, a starter would have been nice. The putting green was very slow but don't be fooled, the greens on the course were anything but slow. Fairways were in great condition, a little soft but to be expected after a nice rain. If you have a free half day it's worth the drive!
Tall grass
Doesn't play too long but that won't matter . Fairways pretty narrow and you better find them or you will e in the tall grass . Tee boxes and greens were in great shape. . GREENS WERE FAST ! Forget trying to drop a shot on because you will till right off. ! Down a club and land sort and roll on . Pin placenta were tough . Overall great links course , a little pricey since there 10 other courses out there in great shape also but I'd go back ! Defiantly one of the more challenging courses on Lon island
Enjoy the wide open spaces at Tallgrass
Tallgrass was a pleasant surprise on Long Island. There's nothing special about the flat, wide open field where the course was laid out. The interest comes in trying to master the course's massive greens and avoid its crater-like bunkers. All the credit goes to Gil Hanse, who has since gone onto architectural fame, redesigning Doral's Blue Monster and the Olympic course in Brazil.
Tall grasses frame the playing corridors in this wind-swept landscape. They are wispy enough that usually golfers can find their balls and even attempt a recovery shot, although they rarely work out as intended. The fairway bunkers are full shot penalties. They're true links bunkers where only wedges will get the ball back in play. I especially enjoyed the mix of par 3s.
