Although it's only an hour from New York City, the Garrison's secluded location nestled in the Hudson Highlands makes it feel much further. Perched 800 feet above the Hudson River, the 18-hole Garrison golf course offers panoramic views of the river and the surrounding mountains. As beautiful as the rolling hills are, they provide a challenging topography that will keep you from being distracted by the scenery. The rolling greens are flanked with bunkers and water. In addition to the uphill, downhill, and side hill lies, you can expect a few tough carries over deep ravines and stands of mature oaks along the fairways. The elevation changes are especially dramatic on the front nine while the back nine is a bit more open and forgiving, but you'll still need accuracy throughout the entire golf course.

This is one of the best public courses in the region. 18 holes. All a challange. All carved into the land beautifuly.

The after 6pm rate for 9 holes with a cart is under $29 and if you ask nicely you can play 10 & 11 also! The staff is great here and the layout is pure Hudson Valley with remarkable views of West Point, the Hudson River and the southern Catskill Mountains.

1st hole: whites: Slight dog/right. 389yd Driver, 7iron to a large open green

2nd hole: 352yd straight away. 3wood (you must be straight. Forced carry of 180yds over woods with an ele. drop of 100+ feet ). 8iron to uphill green. Dont be long on your approach.

    3rd: Par 3 159, large green.

4th: Par 5 500yds Blind drive, slight bend left after 130 yds then straight. You dont want to be right sided here.

5th: 373yds. Driver, 7 iron to uphill green that is deeper than it appears from your approach. You can miss this green slightly and find mucho trouble.

6th: 389yds. I love this hole. If you use driver or three wood you have to cut the left side corner and a large tree (hole is a 30 degree dog/left). If you do, you will be rewarded with a 100 yard pitch, over a stream on to a small green. Otherwise use a hybrid or 5 iron off this tee and play a 6 or 7 iron into the green. The green is lower than the fairway and you really can not be long or wide here.

7th: Be careful crossing a public road to get to the tee box. 435yd Par 5. Bombs away but reaching in two is, well, a reach. I usually end up with a 190-200 yard second shot. The stream is directly in front of the green. Do I use my 3wd?, My 4 hybrid? of course I do. Splash! The smart play is wedge/wedge. I didnt major in smart in college.

8th: Par 3 190yds all up hill. 3 iron hybrid usually does the trick. Straight and short works. Long does not. The day I played here some a-hole tore up a part of the green with a motorcycle not too long ago. Its healing, but I feel for owners and greenskeepers. its hard enough to maintain a golf course. Garrison tries to keep fees reasonable here. The last thing they need is a $5000 repair.

9th: 338yds straight. Driver, 8 iron or less into a slightly elevated green. Look to your left on the fairway & green at the Hudson and West Point. Million dollar view.

I have not played the back nine in years due to a neck operation but I did 30 times or more before the op. It is just as wonderful with an island green par 3 (14th) and severe elevation changes on a couple of others. 12 ,13 and 16 are birdie-able.

If you love and appreciate Northeast golf you will love this course.
